Life has taken me on a bit of a ride lately, as it sometimes does, but I'm back in the saddle again.
My talk at the Derby Neck Library last month went really well! It was so exciting for me to be able to meet some of you in person and it was also very helpful for me to show some of my footage to new eyes. I do have some more work to do on editing before I feel 100% about public viewing, but at least now I know what needs to be worked on.
Since I can't get into the editing lab again until September, I've started writing the book. It is an entirely different method of story-telling, and as I'm going through the process, I've realized the book will be an entirely different type of story than I originally thought it would be.
It's been apparent for some time that the film will definitely be a contrast/comparison essay against "Travels with Charley" and what footage I have, and I sort of thought the book would follow along the same lines--a supplement sort of guide with extra details that you can't get from the film. However, once I started writing, I realized that the book will in fact be my personal accounts of the trip--how I got the idea, what I went through to make the trip a reality, what ordeals I went through, and what my thoughts were as I duplicated Steinbeck's process, and what I learned from the experience. I'm very eager to see how it all pulls together.
It's turning into a very exciting project, and I hope to have at least a rough draft done by the time I get back into the editing lab this fall. However, with all this lovely summer weather we've been having, I have to admit baseball games and lawn work have been keeping me away from the computer of late.
Here's hoping for a rainy weekend or two, soon!
